Secure Shopping Holiday Checklist

A "BUY NOW" ad on a mobile phone

According to Adobe’s annual forecast, shoppers in the U.S. are expected to spend $240.8 billion online this holiday season, and more than 50% of those sales are expected to be on a mobile device. While online shoppers fill their carts, cybercriminals are looking for your personal and financial information and will use multiple methods to lure you into giving it to them.

Those holiday specials and brand advertisements filling your inbox may be well-disguised phishing scams or malware.

You can protect yourself with some Safe Computing advice. Here’s a list, check it twice:

  • Update your software and browser. This ensures you have the latest security patches. Restart your device after updating!
  • Don’t use debit cards online. They don’t have the same consumer protections as credit cards.
  • Don’t click on links in emails or social media feeds. Instead, paste or type the website address in a new browser window. Double-check ads that seem too good to be true and confirm the legitimacy of any charities you want to support to ensure your money goes to the right place.
  • Don’t use public WiFi when shopping online. Public networks make it easy for hackers to access your personal information.
  • Check your credit card statement regularly. Watch for and report fraudulent charges.
