Gemini and NotebookLM Now Available to the U-M Community

The illustration features two individuals seated at a table, each working on a laptop. The scene is set against a blue backdrop with a prominent yellow University of Michigan "M" logo in the center. Above the logo, there are stylized speech bubbles and an "AI" icon, suggesting a dialogue or exchange related to artificial intelligence. The individuals are depicted in yellow tones, focusing intently on their devices. The setting conveys a sense of collaboration and academic engagement in an AI context.

U-M faculty, staff, and students now have access to two powerful new tools in their Google Workspace arsenal: Gemini and NotebookLM, Google’s latest generative AI services.

These tools are available to all active members of the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint, and Michigan Medicine communities via their U-M Google accounts. With the power of Google’s Gemini models behind them, Gemini and NotebookLM offer university-approved ways to brainstorm, draft, synthesize, and explore ideas.

Gemini: Your Creative Copilot

Gemini is a generative AI chat app that can help you:

  • Create new content and images
  • Leverage your Google Drive files in chats
  • Summarize or draft writing
  • Brainstorm and refine ideas
  • Explore complex topics
  • Assist with research and creative work

You can use Gemini on the web or download the mobile app for Android and iOS. Just make sure you’re logged in with your U-M Google account to access the service with U-M’s data protections in place.

NotebookLM: Research Reinvented

NotebookLM is an AI-powered research and note-taking assistant that helps synthesize information across multiple sources. Upload your own documents—PDFs, Google Docs, lecture notes, even syllabi:

  • Organize and synthesize your sources
  • Ask questions and interact with your content
  • Generate new content from sources (Audio overview, summaries, study guides, FAQs)
  • Enhance team collaboration

NotebookLM is especially valuable for faculty and students managing large volumes of material and seeking fast, reliable insight. The mobile app is expected to be released on May 20.

Built with Privacy in Mind

Both tools are considered Google Core Services at U-M, meaning they are approved for use with the same sensitive data allowed in your U-M Google account. Importantly:

  • Your interactions and files are not used to train Google’s AI models.
  • Nothing is shared with third parties.
  • In NotebookLM, all AI responses stay within the sources you provide.
