It’s best to avoid connecting to public WiFi, but if you don’t have access to a U-M WiFi option or your secure home wireless network, you can use public WiFi more securely by following some best practices.
Use a VPN
Secure Your Internet Connection when you are off campus.
- MiWorkspace Windows Users: The Cisco management tunnel is installed on your MiWorkspace Windows computer. It automatically protects many of your connections to U-M resources if you Work Remotely, without you needing to do anything. You may still need to use the U-M VPN to connect to some resources, and you should use the VPN to secure work connections from your personal computer.
- MiWorkspace Mac Users: Your MiWorkspace Mac is configured to use the U-M VPN, but you need to turn it on.
- Devices not managed by MiWorkspace: Getting Started with VPN provides more information on configuring VPN.
Be Aware of What You Share
Limit the personal information you provide when using public WiFi:
- Beware if the registration for free wireless access requires you to provide personal information. Do not connect if it asks for information you are uncomfortable giving.
- Avoid conducting personal business that involves sensitive information, like banking or shopping, on public networks.
- Don’t save a public network for automatic connection later.
