The SecondLook™ Series, an award-winning educational tool that fosters self-review and evaluation, is expanding beyond histology to include mobile applications for musculoskeletal anatomy, neuroanatomy, and oral radiology. The technology behind the SecondLook™ Series was a collaboration between the Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) education and training group and Michael Hortsch, associate professor of cell and developmental biology and associate professor of Learning Health Sciences. The project was made possible in part by a “Teaching with Technology Institute” award from the U-M Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT). All of the apps are available in the iTunes and Google Play stores.
Featuring professionally-drawn illustrations and high-quality anatomy and radiographic images, the SecondLook™ Series helps medical and dental students quickly review their knowledge and recognition skills, as well as uncover deficiencies in their preparation before taking tests. This didactic approach thrives on active learning using technology and electronic devices (computers, tablets, and smartphones) to give students immediate feedback. The apps are also useful when preparing for class or a medical licensing exam.
