MTech: Shaping U-M’s Tech Landscape Together

As our Michigan Technology Community (MTech) – formerly known as Michigan IT – embarks on an exciting new chapter, we’re deepening our commitment to supporting one another as technology professionals across the University of Michigan.

By expanding our network and embracing broader engagement, we’re strengthening our collaborative spirit, continuous learning and innovation that drive teaching, research, and operations.

Welcoming All: Building One U-M Tech Community

Today, MTech unites more than 3,000 staff and faculty who design, support, and lead technology solutions across all U-M campuses.

We welcome everyone: from system administrators, software developers and IT support, to faculty, researchers, clinicians, and administrative staff. Through regular events, peer learning, and mentorship opportunities, we share knowledge and lift each other up, fostering a professional network where every member can thrive.

Bringing together diverse technology voices strengthens our digital environment, sparks new ideas, and empowers staff to deliver on the institution’s mission. By building an inclusive and vibrant space, we support one another.

Showcasing Our Innovations at MTech Connect

Our expanded community will come together at the 12th annual MTech Connect symposium on December 9 in the Central Campus Classroom Building – a can’t-miss event for anyone passionate about technology.

It’s where we spotlight new campus tech initiatives, tools, and strategies. This year, we welcome Charles Severance, clinical professor in the School of Information, as keynote, sharing insights on “Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs): Past, Present, and Future.”

Supporting Each Other: Mentorship and Practice Communities

Our Mentor Program is a cornerstone, bringing colleagues together across schools, colleges, units, and roles to build skills, receive support, and grow in their careers. With more than 500 participants since its inception, the program is making a difference for many in whatever work phase they find themselves.

And with 28 Communities of Practice – covering everything from artificial intelligence and data stewardship to accessibility, leadership and emerging technologies – we promote forums where like-minded individuals can tackle challenges, share solutions and pilot ideas.

Learning and Collaborating Year-Round

From workshops to tours and informational sessions to meditation sessions, our more than 100 yearly MTech events and activities – both in-person and online – offer something for everyone.

We also gather to solve real campus challenges during Hacks with Friends – a hands-on chance to brainstorm, design and prototype new tools, improve user experience or bolster digital security, with winning projects selected for real-world impact.

Staying Informed and Connected

Our monthly MTech newsletter keeps us up to date with articles on tools, policies, service, updates and IT initiatives. The MTech Slack workspace is always buzzing – a virtual hangout for quick questions, brainstorming and peer support.
