Don&#8217;t do it yourself, and don&#8217;t let attackers use your devices to do it. Cryptocurrency mining is a computationally intensive process of validating digital currency transactions that allows the miner to earn transaction fees and digital currency. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illicit cryptocurrency mining has displaced ransomware as the number one cyber security threat, according to industry experts (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jasonbloomberg\/2018\/03\/04\/top-cyberthreat-of-2018-illicit-cryptomining\/#3f9bc3735ae8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes, 3\/4\/18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0It can harm institutions by using significant and costly amounts of computing time and electricity and slowing system performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Don&#8217;t use\u00a0U-M resources for mining<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are prohibited from using university resources (including computing equipment, network services, and electricity) for cryptocurrency mining activities outside of faculty-approved research and coursework according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/spg.umich.edu\/policy\/601.07\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responsible Use of Information Resources (SPG 601.07)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This use is essentially theft.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Protect yourself from mining malware<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attackers use phishing techniques to trick victims into clicking links that load cryptocurrency mining code on their computers or infect websites with malicious code.
