The Michigan Institute for Data Science awarded the three interdisciplinary projects a combined $3 million under the second round of its <a href=\"http:\/\/midas.umich.edu\/challenges\/\">Challenge Initiative program<\/a>. &#8220;These projects have the potential to improve the lives of millions of people and to enhance our understanding of the basic elements of cell biology,&#8221; said MIDAS co-director <strong>Brian Athey<\/strong>, professor and chair of computational medicine and bioinformatics. &#8220;Plus, the data science tools and methodologies being developed by the U-M research teams will be applicable for many other fields of inquiry.&#8221; Other funded projects include using\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ns.umich.edu\/new\/releases\/24488-social-media-tapped-for-insights-into-economics-political-communication-parenting\">Big Data from social media<\/a> to gain new insights into economics and the way people communicate about parenting and politics.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at U-M\u00a0will use Big Data and mobile technology to learn how to predict when individuals will get diseases, and to unlock the potential of single-cell gene sequencing under three recently funded projects.
