The new U-M CUI CoP has evolved from the Export Controls CoP, which <\/span>now falls under the umbrella of the CUI CoP.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

U-M, like all research universities, must comply with an array of federal laws, regulations, and executive orders that mandate stringent <\/span>security <\/span>requirements intended to protect confidential, sensitive, or regulated information. <\/span>An emerging and important <\/span>piece to U-M\u2019s responsibility to protect <\/span>this type of <\/span>data is the federal C<\/span>UI <\/span>program.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>CUI <\/span>program was established by Executive Order <\/span>as a means to implement a uniform set of information security controls <\/span>that <\/span>will s<\/span>ecure sensitive information obtained, held, or created by federal executive agencies<\/span>. While <\/span>CUI <\/span>security <\/span>requirements do not apply directly to non-federal entities, <\/span>the security requirements <\/span>can flow down <\/span>to <\/span>U-M<\/span> when researchers <\/span>and other University entities <\/span>are given access to <\/span>CUI by <\/span>federal agencies<\/span>,<\/span> or create CUI on behalf of federal agencies, <\/span>under the terms of a contract, grant, or other agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CUI program applies to a wide range of information categories, including <\/span>export-controlled<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span>, <\/span>that <\/span>U-M researchers and others may encounter<\/span> (you can explore the full<\/span> <\/span>CUI Categories List<\/span><\/a> <\/span>at the National Archives web site<\/span>)<\/span>. <\/span>Accordingly, the CUI CoP will meet four times a year to discuss relevant changes in policy, assist the community with problem solving, and ensure that those who handle CUI have the tools they need.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>CUI <\/span>C<\/span>o<\/span>P is open to anyone interested in learning more about CUI and the mailing list can be used at any<\/span> <\/span>time by anyone who needs more information or help with a <\/span>CUI <\/span>problem.<\/span> You can also learn more about the U-M CUI oversight program by going to<\/span> U-M\u2019s <\/span>External Funding and Information Security Requirements<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)<\/span><\/a> web sites.
