{"id":6638,"date":"2018-01-18T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T13:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/?p=6638"},"modified":"2024-07-08T06:06:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T10:06:06","slug":"inew-cloud-vendors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/18\/inew-cloud-vendors\/","title":{"rendered":"ITS offers new cloud vendor choices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For several years, Information and Technology Services (ITS) offered Amazon Web Services\u00a0<\/span>(AWS)\u00a0at U-M as its sole cloud computing IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) offering. That is changing. U-M recently signed enterprise agreements to offer Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The addition of these industry leading vendors provides a strong foundation of cloud computing solutions, and will\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable ITS and U-M to be more nimble and resilient in their efforts to support the university&#8217;s key initiatives in innovative ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U-M has also executed business associate agreements with these three vendors and is working with Michigan Medicine Compliance and Information Assurance on guidance to allow use of the three cloud services for protected health information (regulated by HIPAA) and other sensitive institutional data. Until that work is complete and guidance on use of the services is available, users\u00a0<\/span>should not<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0store HIPAA data on these services. Additional information on using these services with other types of sensitive university data will soon be available in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safecomputing.umich.edu\/dataguide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Computing Sensitive Data Guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By working with these vendors to secure better terms and discounts\u00a0available only through ITS,\u00a0the U-M community can more easily consume public cloud computing<\/span>. The ITS service also provides integration with campus resources and security monitoring, as well as limited consulting and training.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty, researchers, and staff on all U-M campuses, including Michigan Medicine, can now use AWS, Azure, and GCP for their cloud computing needs.
