Ask the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wdi.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Davidson Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WDI), a nonprofit education and research organization at the Ross School of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WDI has created a \u201cvirtual exchange\u201d of undergraduate students across cultures in an eight-week challenge of social entrepreneurship. The program is called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wdi.umich.edu\/m2gate-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MENA-Michigan Initiative for Global Action Through Entrepreneurship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (M\u00b2GATE), and it connects U-M undergrads with students in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to create a meaningful, international experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThis is a new form of exchange.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Amy Gillett<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a new form of exchange,\u201d said Amy Gillett, vice president of the William Davidson Institute&#8217;s Education Initiative. \u201cMichigan is huge on in-person exchange, and we\u2019re happy to be involved in a virtual exchange for the first time, bringing students together who would otherwise not get the chance to meet, let alone collaborate on a high-impact project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>M\u00b2GATE aims to provide solutions to low- and middle-income countries\u2014namely Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Students who participate in M\u00b2GATE build STEM-based skills through entrepreneurship and cross-cultural understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to work on global, virtual teams is a skillset of future, and it\u2019s a guiding principle in this grant project,\u201d said Nathan Rauh-Bieri, program administrator of the William Davidson Institute&#8217;s Education Initiative. The digital nature of the program also allows interactive breakout exercises that keep students engaged. The eight-week program&#8217;s first cohort began on January 26, 2018, and additional cohorts are schedule for April\u2013June and May\u2013July.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the hood<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does the magic happen? WDI developed an in-house learning management system called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.extendedportal.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ExtendEd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that supports M\u00b2GATE. ExtendEd was developed over two years as a way to organize short-term education programs. The tool presents learning as a before-during-after process\u2014extending education over time\u2014and allows administrators and participants to easily share resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video also plays an important role in the curriculum. Teams complete online learning modules hosted on the ExtendEd portal on a week-to-week basis, honing their entrepreneurial skills to create a scalable solution to the problem they identified. The final deliverable is a video pitch that addresses a social challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team effort<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00b2GATE and ExtendEd benefit from a team of experts at U-M. Christerfer Frazier, IT\u00a0project manager at WDI, advised the team on the use of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/its.umich.edu\/communication\/videoconferencing\/blue-jeans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlueJeans videoconferencing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an essential part of the virtual exchange. \u201cWe\u2019re really happy U-M is using BlueJeans. All of our tests have been smooth,\u201d said Rauh-Bieri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Todd Austin, senior IT consultant and videoconferencing lead for LSA Instructional Support Services, was instrumental in moderating the program\u2019s orientation, a synchronous BlueJeans event between U-M students in Ann Arbor and their peers at sites in Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Sheri Fillip, operations scheduler for Ross IT, managed the classroom\u2019s video, audio, and recording. Chris Visel, instructional support manager for Michigan Ross IT, also played an important role by demonstrating the video recording capabilities at Ross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss IT is tremendously supportive,\u201d said Rauh-Bieri. \u201cThey have been very gracious with their time and expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cRoss IT been very gracious with their time &amp; expertise.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Nathan\u00a0Rauh-Bieri<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Each e-learning module is created in-house at WDI.
