{"id":4690,"date":"2017-08-21T14:47:33","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T18:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/?p=4690"},"modified":"2024-07-08T06:06:18","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T10:06:18","slug":"tapdancing-around-the-censors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/21\/tapdancing-around-the-censors\/","title":{"rendered":"TapDancing around the censors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What if circumventing internet censorship didn&#8217;t rely on some app or service provider that could eventually get blocked, but was instead built into the very core of the internet itself?\u00a0After six years in development, three research groups including the <strong>University of Michigan<\/strong> have joined forces to conduct real-world tests of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/tapdance-refraction-networking-decoy-routing-test-usenix-1.4249177\">experimental new technique called &#8220;refraction networking<\/a>.&#8221; They call their particular implementation\u00a0TapDance, and it&#8217;s designed to sit within the internet&#8217;s core.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers deployed TapDance within two ISPs (Merit Network and the University of Colorado Boulder) for\u00a0over a week this past spring to help\u00a0more than 50,000 users around the world access the free and open internet\u2014the first time such a test has been done outside the lab, and at such a large scale.
