The Michigan Flora was originally published in a series of three volumes in the 1970s, \u201980s and \u201990s, and then consolidated and republished as the Field Manual of Michigan Flora in 2012. It allows users to identify plants and includes plants\u2019 scientific names, habitat, whether they\u2019re native to the region, and maps that indicate in which counties plant species are found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website is a continuously updated successor to the Field Manual of Michigan Flora, a comprehensive guide to plants that grow in Michigan. It allows users to identify plants and includes plants\u2019 scientific names, habitat, whether they\u2019re native to the region, and maps that indicate in which counties plant species are found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/new-plant-identification-app-available-powered-by-u-m-herbarium-Brad-Ruhfel-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brad Ruhfel<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, researchers as well as citizen scientists will be able to access the plant identification benefits from their phones using the Michigan Flora app, even when they don\u2019t have internet service, says U-M Herbarium research collection manager and assistant research scientist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/herbarium\/people\/collection-managers\/brad-ruhfel.html\">Brad Ruhfel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe website was a huge step forward, but there was a roadblock to using it in the field. If you don\u2019t have Wi-Fi or cell signal, you can\u2019t use the flora website,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of people who use this resource are out in the field identifying plants in places where you don\u2019t have an internet connection. Like the website, the app will contain information about where a plant grows, photographs, its habitat, whether it\u2019s native, and in what kinds of conditions it grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/new-plant-identification-app-available-powered-by-u-m-herbarium-Anton-Reznicek-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:121px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anton Reznicek<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/eeb\/people\/faculty-emeriti\/reznicek.html\">Anton Reznicek<\/a>, a U-M botanist who was integral in developing the Field Manual of Michigan Flora, says the app will also open access to Michigan Flora to a wider audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost young people work with their phones\u2014so this makes the flora more usefully accessible to a broader array of people, including the general public, who might not buy the book or necessarily use the website,\u201d said Reznicek, research scientist emeritus and curator emeritus of vascular plants at the U-M Herbarium and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruhfel expects U-M students to use the mobile app as well as researchers and scientists from groups such as Michigan State University\u2019s Michigan Natural Features Inventory, which catalogues rare plants and animals, as well as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, federal agencies and other professionals doing site work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also thinks it will be of use to anyone who has a passing interest in the plants of Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The app will also link to the website iNaturalist, a social network for people interested in the natural world. Users can snap photos of a plant and upload it to the community\u2014and the Michigan Flora app can help users accurately identify the specimens they have observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do expect a whole range of people, from professional, technical and scientific researchers to curious folks who like wildflowers to use it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Michigan Flora Online website is continuously updated, the information on the app will not change until the app undergoes updates, which Ruhfel says will happen as often as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruhfel is on the board of directors for the Michigan Botanical Society and the Michigan Botanical Foundation that provided financial support for the Michigan Flora App development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The app is available for download for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/id6756502947\">Apple<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=edu.umich.michiganflora\">Android<\/a>&nbsp;users.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biologists and plant enthusiasts now have the power of Michigan\u2019s most complete plant identification guide in the palm of their hands.
