{"id":30252,"date":"2026-07-20T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/?p=30252"},"modified":"2026-07-21T12:29:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T16:29:29","slug":"k-12-emerging-technology-summit-cybersecurity-and-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2026\/07\/20\/k-12-emerging-technology-summit-cybersecurity-and-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"K-12 Emerging Technology Summit: Cybersecurity and AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">K-12 school systems and higher education institutions face similar challenges as they strive to keep pace with rapidly evolving cybersecurity threats and emerging technologies, such as AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marsal Family School of Education and Information and Technology Services (ITS) co-hosted the all-day event for Michigan K-12 superintendents and IT professionals to engage with and learn from U-M experts about their shared experiences in the current digital landscape and how to ethically and responsibly meet the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elizabeth Birr Moje, dean of the Marsal Family School of Education, provided important context when she opened the event, \u201cWe don&#8217;t want to wrap all the attention around the problems of cheating with AI. AI can strengthen our defenses and be a force for tremendous good, but only when it is used ethically, responsibly, and with sound human judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Generative AI in the Classroom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the morning, Ben Andries, Monica Hickson, and Jen Wilkerson of the ITS Emerging Technology team presented on the fundamentals of AI in K-12 environments, covering topics such as policies, community engagement, and AI vendors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 49%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked, participants said they wanted to learn how they could prepare their K-12 students to use AI effectively when they get to college. Jennifer Love of ITS Teaching and Learning discussed the possibilities for AI in the classroom, while addressing concerns around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/er.educause.edu\/articles\/2025\/12\/the-paradox-of-ai-assistance-better-results-worse-thinking\">cognitive offloading<\/a>. Hudeck set the stage by walking through threat actors\u2019 motivations and common\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/teaching-and-administration\/safe-learning-environments\/school-safety-and-security\/k-12-cybersecurity\">cybersecurity challenges of K-12 schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Womble then facilitated tabletop exercises that allowed participants to practice what to do in the event of a disruption in technology services. The groups discussed who would handle communications, how daily processes would be carried out without technology, and when to alert families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Shared Responsibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 53%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the final session, \u201cPreparing for the Never-Ending Journey,\u201d Hudeck stressed the importance of incident response planning and improving awareness for educators, staff, and families.
