You\u2019ll rest assured that you\u2019re ready to take off on your next adventure, and well prepared to safeguard both your own and the university&#8217;s data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b3c50aa1\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Preparing for Travel<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Only take what you need: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t take personal or U-M data or devices you won&#8217;t need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/encrypt-your-data\">encrypted devices<\/a> when you travel with U-M data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Update and prepare your devices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Update all software and operating systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backup your device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Set up basic security settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a passcode and auto-lock on all devices. Lock them when not in use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn on the find-my-device feature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are travelling outside the United States, see <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/travel-safely-with-technology\/taking-tech-devices-across-international-borders\">International Travel with Technology<\/a> for important guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e5a1f67b\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">While Traveling<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect Securely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disable auto-connecting to WiFi<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/be-safe-online\/secure-connection\">VPN or cellular network<\/a> for a more secure connection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid common security pitfalls: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not leave your devices unattended in public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t use free charging stations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never enter or access sensitive data when using a shared or public computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be cautious about sharing location and other sensitive information on social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-93ed4a93\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Traveling and U-M Data<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The university strongly recommends that you not take U-M data or devices while traveling. If you need to do U-M business while on the road, remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask your IT department for a loaner device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If traveling internationally for work, you should add your travel to the <a href=\"http:\/\/global.umich.edu\/travel-resources\/register-your-travel\/\">U-M Travel Registry<\/a>. It is also recommended for domestic work travel.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/global.umich.edu\/\">Global Michigan<\/a> provides helpful additional information at <a href=\"http:\/\/global.umich.edu\/travel-resources\">Travel Resources<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-bd5bb4b6\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Complying with U.S. and Foreign Laws<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. and foreign laws may affect what tech you can take across borders, and who has the right to access it. Some examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may be asked to unlock and allow searches of your devices when entering most countries. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/travel\/cbp-search-authority\/border-search-electronic-devices\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)<\/a> may demand access to your devices when leaving, entering, or reentering the U.S. See guidance in <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/travel-safely-with-technology\/taking-tech-devices-across-international-borders#Border_Security\">Be Prepared for Border Security<\/a> on the Safe Computing website.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some technologies may not be taken to other countries.
