Traditional business intelligence tools require expensive licenses, dedicated IT staff, and months of deployment cycles. A new open source tool developed at Michigan Medicine aims to eliminate those barriers entirely.

DataLaVistaTM, created by members of the “Automators Anonymous” Community of Practice (CoP) from the Eisenberg Family Depression Center (EFDC), Patient Safety, and Internal Medicine/Pulmonary, runs entirely in your browser with no servers, databases, or IT support required. The single-file dashboard designer transforms data into interactive visualizations instantly.

“We built DataLaVistaTM out of necessity,” said Gabriel Mongefranco, mobile data architect at the Depression Center. “Colleagues in Patient Safety and Pulmonary needed critical dashboards for SharePoint list data — everything from EFDC’s CRM to pulmonary nursing schedules to quality and safety outcomes — but dashboard licenses were unavailable. We explored how far we could push AI technology to rapidly build fully-functional prototypes, iterating across Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT over two weeks. Fine-tuning still required extensive manual coding, but we chose to release it as open source because it solves very common problems: fast dashboard creation without expensive infrastructure, and easier access to SharePoint data.”

DataLaVistaTM connects to SharePoint lists, Excel files, CSV data, and REST APIs. Users can build queries visually with a point-and-click interface, or write SQL directly in an advanced editor with autocomplete and validation. The tool generates essential visualizations including KPIs, tables, charts, pivot grids, and custom widgets.
Because DataLaVistaTM runs purely client-side JavaScript, it requires zero infrastructure investment. Drop the single HTML file into SharePoint, a shared drive, or any website, and start building dashboards immediately.

The tool is currently in beta testing across Patient Safety, the Depression Center, Pulmonology, Neurology Sleep Clinic, and diabetes-related research projects at the Medical School.

DataLaVistaTM is available now under the GNU GPL v3 license.
