Today, the space uses tech to create a more intentional and interactive experience for curious visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A layered experience, not just a display<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamara Barnes, the museum&#8217;s director, recalls that when she first started in the role the exhibits were largely static. Information lived on labels, and every visitor received the same experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s been the fun part,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve been able to add so much more content through the kiosk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 52%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interactive kiosks now sit alongside artifacts, offering layers of information that visitors can choose based on their interest. Some may want deeper history. The experience adapts to the person, not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology, with an off switch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s notable is that technology hasn\u2019t taken over the space. Barnes is thoughtful about balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That balance shows up in hands-on activities, especially for children. In fact, the museum wasn\u2019t always designed with them in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBefore I got here, I think it actually said on the website that it wasn\u2019t suitable for children,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve made a big effort to add hands-on activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Visitors might come across everything from historical dental tools to more unexpected exhibits, like teeth modification, alongside the stories that give them context. \u201cOur museum is just a lot of eye candy,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you don\u2019t want to be on a screen, there\u2019s also a lot to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessibility, beyond compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessibility shows up in expected ways with contrast, font choices, physical access to kiosks. That means staff no longer need to manually check conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can see from home if the temperature drops or the humidity rises\u2026 it\u2019s a big time-saver, and it\u2019s more accurate.\u201d The result is better protection for the museum\u2019s collections without adding anything new to the visitor\u2019s cognitive load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A niche space for innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Museum technology doesn\u2019t come neatly packaged. \u201cThere aren\u2019t any software companies that really have picked it up as a niche thing,\u201d Barnes explains. Instead of the newest tools, the museum relies on adapting what exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s able to take what\u2019s out there and really retrofit it for the specific need,\u201d she says of exhibit developer Thomas Howes, a trusted collaborator from her previous museum who now builds custom solutions for the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, the museum is still exploring what\u2019s possible. \u201cWe\u2019re really just starting to use technology,\u201d Barnes says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future ideas include expanded digital content, more use of archival media, and custom presentations for group visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even small barriers, like needing to sign into Wi-Fi before using QR codes, can be enough to keep visitors from engaging with digital content at all. \u201cIt\u2019s getting people to take that extra step,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tucked into the older Kellogg section of the building, the museum isn\u2019t always easy to find. \u201cOur biggest challenge is that people don\u2019t know we are here,\u201d Barnes says, and it\u2019s something she\u2019s working to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a community interested in how technology shapes learning, design, and experience, the museum invites a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/42.2608896,-85.6326144\/University+of+Michigan+School+of+Dentistry\/@42.2627669,-85.8038906,8z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m9!4m8!1m1!4e1!1m5!1m1!1s0x883cae4165ca0249:0xef30f05f3d736ba!2m2!1d-83.7363897!2d42.2790994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1011 N.
