Information and Technology Services is sponsoring a project to replace the Border Interconnect Network, or BIN, that serves the Ann Arbor campus, including Michigan Medicine.

A dedicated ITS project team, including representatives from Merit Network, Health Information Technology and Services, and UM-Dearborn Information Technology Services, is supporting this upgrade.

The BIN Replacement project, which began in February 2024 and will continue until late 2024, involves changing out two critical border routers. One of the chief objectives of this undertaking is to increase the institution’s internet and Internet2 connection speeds. With the new routers in place, the university—particularly faculty and researchers—will experience the benefits of improved response times for data sharing as early as fall 2024. Financially, there will be no cost to schools, colleges, or units beyond the standard internet fees already being contributed.

This investment in the university’s network is expected to meet the institution’s needs for the next six to eight years. Nevertheless, ITS remains agile and open to advancing the timeline for replacement should future networking standards or university requirements mandate doing so.

More information is available on the BIN Replacement website.
