{"id":24849,"date":"2021-11-15T12:31:50","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T17:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/?p=24849"},"modified":"2024-07-08T06:04:27","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T10:04:27","slug":"classic-google-sites-retires-2022-convert-to-new-google-sites-asap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2021\/11\/15\/classic-google-sites-retires-2022-convert-to-new-google-sites-asap\/","title":{"rendered":"Classic Google Sites retires 2022, convert to new Google Sites ASAP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UPDATE, November 16, 2021:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On November 16, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/workspaceupdates.googleblog.com\/2021\/11\/classic-sites-timeline-update-november-2021.html\">Google announced<\/a> that they have extended the previously announced timeline to retire classic Google Sites. The ability to edit classic Google Sites now ends on June 1, 2022, and Google will begin deactivating those sites on July 1, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty, staff, and students with existing classic Sites should convert them to new Google Sites before the new year to avoid possible data loss. ITS strongly recommends university community members with classic Sites do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before J<strong>une 1, 2022 (previously December 1, 2021)<\/strong><\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Verify their U-M classic Sites have an @umich.edu owner.<\/li><li>Assign ownership to someone with an @umich.edu email address if their classic Sites don\u2019t already have someone who does.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before <strong>July 1, 2022 (previously January 1, 2022)<\/strong><\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Convert their classic Sites to new Sites.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ITS is sending emails to impacted classic Sites owners encouraging them to review the step-by-step instructions on how to verify U-M ownership and convert to new Sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google Sites are a free and easy way to create public-facing websites without programming experience or knowledge of code. After switching to the new version of Google Sites, Site owners will have access to more modern website features, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Modern site tiles:<\/strong> Use image carousel, placeholders, buttons, collapsible text, and more.<\/li><li><strong>Mobile-friendly:<\/strong> Adjust your site to the best layout for a computer, phone, or tablet.<\/li><li><strong>Review changes:<\/strong> Preview edits before you publish them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/its.umich.edu\/communication\/collaboration\/google\/new-google-sites\">Learn more about switching to new Sites.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ITS Service Center will be available to offer support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More information<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/its.umich.edu\/communication\/collaboration\/google\/\">U-M Google<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.its.umich.edu\/node\/2705\">Convert Your Classic Google Sites to New Sites<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U-M Google classic Sites is going away soon.
