Image courtesy of Medicine at Michigan Magazine.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Michigan is one of eight sites around the country that will enroll patients in a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a technology that uses ultrasound to treat liver tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04572633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#HOPE4LIVER trial<\/a>&nbsp;will employ the noninvasive technique to mechanically destroy primary and metastatic liver tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology, called histotripsy, was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/labblog.uofmhealth.org\/health-tech\/new-ultrasonic-therapy-obliterates-tissue-without-physical-contact\">developed by U-M researchers over more than 15 years<\/a>&nbsp;and is being commercialized by a U-M startup company,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/histosonics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HistoSonics<\/a>,&nbsp;which is sponsoring the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using ultrasonic pulses is nothing new to medicine, but the process behind histotripsy is. While previous techniques use heat energy to ablate tissues, histotripsy harnesses the energy of thousands of microbubbles \u2014 called cavitation \u2014 to emulsify tissue.
