Make sure they are appropriately secured to protect yourself and U-M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you access or maintain sensitive university data with your devices, you are responsible for securing them. See: <a href=\"https:\/\/spg.umich.edu\/policy\/601.33\">Security of Personally Owned Devices That Access or Maintain Sensitive Institutional Data (SPG 601.33)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start with the basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep the operating system up-to-date.<\/li><li>Keep your apps updated.<\/li><li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/secure-your-devices\/antivirus-personal\">antivirus or endpoint protection software<\/a> on devices that can run it.<\/li><li>Remove unused apps, especially from mobile devices.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/secure-your-devices\">Secure Your Devices<\/a> for links to info specific to different devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turn on encryption<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encryption protects against unauthorized access to data if your device is lost or stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>iPhones and iPads have encryption turned on automatically if you require a passcode or biometric for access.<\/li><li>Android phones with Android 5 or above have encryption turned on automatically.<\/li><li>Encrypt your personal Mac by turning on FileVault.<\/li><li>Encrypt your personal Windows computer by turning on BitLocker.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encryption is required for working with some data or systems at U-M. See details on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safecomputing.umich.edu\/protect-yourself\/encrypt-your-data\">Encrypt Your Data and Devices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MiWorkspace laptops and Health Information Technology &amp; Services (HITS) managed devices from Michigan Medicine are encrypted for you.
