Help the university protect your privacy by storing them in a folder labeled <strong>Personal and Private<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With some exceptions as outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/spg.umich.edu\/policy\/601.11\">Privacy and the Need to Monitor and Access University Records (SPG 601.11)<\/a>, (for example, when required by law or needed to avert threats to IT systems), the university will not monitor or access materials in folders labeled <strong>Personal and Private<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On your computer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MiWorkspace computers have a <strong>Personal and Private<\/strong> folder already set up for you to use in your home directory:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Windows:<\/strong> U:Personal and Private<\/li><li><strong>Mac:<\/strong> Finder\/Go\/Home\/Personal and Private<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In storage space<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter what the service at U-M, if you create folders or labels called <strong>Personal and Private<\/strong>, the university will treat the contents of those folders as non-institutional data and refrain from monitoring or accessing them in accordance with SPG 601.11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/safecomputing.umich.edu\/privacy\/privacy-u-m\/personal-private-folder\">Use &#8220;Personal and Private&#8221; Folders to Protect Privacy<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/its.umich.edu\/miworkspace\/how-do-i\/store-access-backup-data\">Store, Access &amp; Back Up Data on MiWorkspace<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/spg.umich.edu\/policy\/601.07\"><em>Responsible Use of Information Resources (SPG 601.07)<\/em><\/a> allows for limited personal use of U-M computing resources.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/spg.umich.edu\/policy\/601.11\"><em>Privacy and the Need to Monitor and Access University Records (SPG 601.11)<\/em><\/a> states, \u201cthe University permits some latitude for employees to use University resources\u2026to conduct personal matters at their work sites, <em>work-related records<\/em> and employees\u2019 <em>personal records<\/em> may be located in the same place.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you have personal, non-work files on your university-owned computer or in an online storage space provided by U-M?
