(The Michigan Engineer\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An \u201cunhackable\u201d computer chip lived up to its name, foiling over 500 hackers who were offered tens of thousands of dollars to crack it and three other secure processor technologies. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.engin.umich.edu\/2021\/02\/morpheus-vs-everybody\/\">MORPHEUS, developed by electrical engineering and computer science researchers at U-M, weathered the virtual competition<\/a>, which ran from June through August of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U-M team achieved its results by abandoning a cornerstone of traditional computer security\u2014finding and eliminating software bugs, explained <strong>Todd Austin<\/strong>, the team\u2019s leader and professor of computer science and engineering. MORPHEUS works by reconfiguring key bits of its code and data dozens of times per second, turning any vulnerabilities into dead ends for hackers. \u201cImagine trying to solve a Rubik\u2019s Cube that rearranges itself every time you blink,\u201d Austin said. \u201cThat\u2019s what hackers are up against with MORPHEUS.
