It turns out, quite a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cio.umich.edu\/michigan-it\/hacks-with-friends\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hacks with Friends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which took place March 2\u20133, was overflowing with new and innovative ideas. Over 100 Michigan IT staff came together with explosive creativity, demonstrating the value of cross-pollination and, in many cases, the expertise to build working prototypes in 10 working hours across two business days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event highlights the spirit of Michigan IT to design and engineer solutions that support the world-class faculty at the University of Michigan.\u201d said Kelli Trosvig, U-M\u2019s first VPIT-CIO. \u201cThere is a real sense of community spirit here.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cMichigan IT designs solutions that support the world-class faculty at U-M.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Kelli Trosvig<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trosvig went on to highlight the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion, encouraging the groups to embrace the theme as they set forth to design and build their hacks with accessibility in mind. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2017\/01\/27\/register-now-for-hacks-with-friends-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hacks with Friends projects fell under <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cio.umich.edu\/michigan-it\/hacks-with-friends#themes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven themes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, six of which came from President Schlissel\u2019s areas of focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of day one, team leaders who <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cio.umich.edu\/michigan-it\/hacks-with-friends\/submitted-pitches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted pitches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energetically took the stage to invite \u00a0teammates who would help bring their ideas to fruition. A total of 11 teams participated this year\u2014although 15 were proposed\u2014and teams ranged in size from two to 12 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genius-level support<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New this year was an onsite support team of highly-skilled technologists modeled after the experts you would expect to see in an Apple Store. The team of nine volunteers was prepared to address technical issues teams might face, like hosting, cloud storage, data integration, and general computing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crew was also available for quality assurance and bug testing for the applications being developed. One of the volunteers was Peter Knoop, LSA-IT app programmer\/analyst, who could be found wearing a Microsoft HoloLens augmented-reality headset. The gear, he said, was to demonstrate its potential for modeling 3D spaces, such as in urban planning. This kind of cutting-edge immersion in the practical aspects of new technology is analogous to the Michigan IT talent across the university, each experts in their own right.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe were able to adapt the improvements into our demo that day.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Luke Palnau<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Knoop was slated to support mapping and geographic information systems (GIS), he found another way to help one of the finalist teams, Crowdfunding DIY. \u201cPeter was helpful in providing UX feedback for the form we were designing,\u201d said Luke Palnau, associate director for web and data integration at the Office of University Development. \u201cIn the spirit of agile\/scrum we were able to adapt the minimally-viable improvements into our demo that day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many winners, one award<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Participants voted on four teams to advance in an interactive round of text messaging. The four teams that made <a href=\"https:\/\/rossmedia.bus.umich.edu\/rossmedia\/Play\/f91af01f335a4977bfee12af44e656fd1d\">finalist presentations<\/a> to the three judges were:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"omsc-one-half\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>TriggerFigureOuter (winner)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a way for users to submit data and a diary of incidents to analyze which foods and behaviors trigger health conditions. Submitted by <strong>Emily Springfield<\/strong>, Dentistry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bicentennial Camera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a prototype enabling users to experience and engage with a trove of historical images related to U-M\u2019s bicentennial. Submitted by <strong>Nabeela Jaffer<\/strong>, Library IT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Crowdfunding DIY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open-source crowdfunding platform designed to enable U-M giving and for other non-profits and higher ed institutions to use. Submitted by <strong>Luke Palnau<\/strong>, Office of University Development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Grade export file formatter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an app, affectionately called G.E.F.F., that could potentially save thousands of hours in labor by automatically formatting CSV files from Canvas.
