Students eagerly planned to live away from home, at the BioStation near Douglas Lake in Pellston, Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the university announced that spring and summer courses would be virtual, faculty and staff at the BioStation had to redesign their courses, almost all of which involve in-person and field components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was definitely in \u2018panic mode,\u2019 thinking about how we were going to do all this,\u201d Charles Davis, a professor at the BioStation, said of the stressful two-month turnaround.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and fellow instructor Susan Fawcett debated how to virtually adapt their class, \u201cField Botany in Northern Michigan.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/engaged.umich.edu\/news-features\/ecology-in-the-digital-age-u-m-students-use-machine-learning-for-summer-research\/\">Their solution: Drop the class entirely and create something new.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to the pandemic, enrollment for spring and summer field classes at the U-M Biological Station were at an all time high.
