However, recent research by U-M&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mary Gallagher<\/strong>\u00a0(director of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies) and <strong>Blake Miller <\/strong>(a PhD candidate in political science)\u00a0found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2017\/02\/21\/can-the-chinese-government-really-control-the-internet-we-found-cracks-in-the-great-firewall\/?utm_term=.b5f99c513077\">information control in China is more varied and decentralized than\u00a0previously thought<\/a>. &#8220;Our research uses new online analysis methods\u00a0and reveals serious cracks,&#8221; they write. &#8220;Although extensive, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) system of control over online social interaction is quite diffuse \u2014 and at times incoherent.&#8221; Using metadata from a database of more than\u00a050 million posts on Chinese news websites, Gallagher and Blake\u00a0identified government astroturfers (fake &#8220;grass-roots&#8221; commenters) and found that their\u00a0work is highly decentralized and erratic, and the fake posts are often at odds with the expressed preferences of the central government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Great Firewall of China, the vast hardware and software system the Chinese government uses to prevent access to certain Internet content, is often depicted as monolithic and Orwellian.
