Google Chat is an updated, team-based experience and better integrates with G Suite. Refresh your browser to <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.its.umich.edu\/node\/1877\">get started using Google Chat<\/a> in Gmail. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.its.umich.edu\/node\/2116\">U-M Google Chat FAQ<\/a> for answers to commonly asked questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ITS strongly recommends the use of Google Chat<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chat\/answer\/7659784?hl=en\">rooms<\/a> for team-based work. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chat\/answer\/7659784?hl=en\">Group messages<\/a> are still available for smaller, private conversations. (You will need to recreate any group messages you may have used in classic Hangouts.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does this affect me?<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All previous one-to-one messages from classic Hangouts now appear in Google Chat.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Classic Hangouts group messages do not appear in Chat but should be available at <a href=\"https:\/\/hangouts.google.com\">hangouts.google.com<\/a> until the end of 2020.<\/li><li><strong>All classic Hangouts desktop, mobile, and browser extensions or applications are now deactivated<\/strong>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.its.umich.edu\/node\/1877\">Learn more about getting started with Google Chat at U-M<\/a> and its current features and limitations.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about communicating with people outside of U-M?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Google Chat group messages and rooms will not send messages to people outside of U-M who are still using classic Hangouts.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Google Chat rooms can include people from outside the university<\/strong>. But, if they are not already using Google Chat they will not be able to see the message in classic Hangouts and will need to open Chat through <a href=\"https:\/\/chat.google.com\">chat.google.com<\/a>. Additionally, they will not be able to see room messages in classic Hangouts.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Group messages created in classic Hangouts with people outside of U-M need to continue in <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hangouts.google.com\"><strong>classic Hangouts<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.its.umich.edu\/node\/1877\">Learn more about communicating with people outside the university on Chat.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about calling and video conferences?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Phone calls can continue to be made in classic Hangouts. Phone calls cannot be made from Google Chat.<\/li><li>Google Meet is now the default video conferencing option in Google Chat.
