A marked increase in the online dissemination of intentionally false information has led librarians to join with campus partners at LSA\u00a0to <a href=\"http:\/\/ns.umich.edu\/new\/releases\/24593-u-m-library-battles-fake-news-with-new-class\">create a class aimed at helping students develop better critical evaluation skills of news items<\/a>. The one-credit course, called &#8220;Fake News, Lies, and Propaganda: How to Sort Fact from Fiction,&#8221; will be available to students starting in fall 2017. &#8220;Recent concerns about &#8216;fake news&#8217; and &#8216;alternative facts&#8217; has us looking for ways to expand our professional efforts to help students become more critical and reflective information consumers,&#8221; said <strong>Laurie Alexander<\/strong>, associate university librarian for learning and teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Updated 3-29-17: Learn more on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/can-librarians-save-us-from-fake-news\">how other libraries\u00a0across the country are trying to educate people<\/a> into being better, more discerning consumers of news.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U-M\u00a0Library, which has a long record of improving the way students go about finding, evaluating, and using information in their academic work, is fighting back against fake news.
