{"id":18205,"date":"2020-03-23T14:57:36","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T18:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/?p=18205"},"modified":"2024-07-08T06:05:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T10:05:04","slug":"undergraduate-laptop-program-expands-supports-low-income-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/23\/undergraduate-laptop-program-expands-supports-low-income-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate laptop program expands, supports low-income students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FlntCmpsStck-3-12-18129-Matthew-Martin-700x467.png\" alt=\"Two young women looking at laptop\" class=\"wp-image-12265\"\/><figcaption>(Michigan Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2017\/01\/23\/755\/\">previously awarded<\/a> undergraduate laptop program has grown wings and taken flight beyond its home at LSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now called the Michigan Undergraduate Laptop Program, it has moved to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Enrollment Management (OEM)<\/a> where it will have broader impact to support students in U-M schools and colleges across the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Staff are working to identify a way to allow new incoming and existing students to keep their borrowed laptops.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program was <a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.umich.edu\/news-features\/news\/lsa-laptop-loan-program-helps-low-income-students-succeed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"originally conceived at LSA (opens in a new tab)\">originally conceived at LSA<\/a> to create a more inclusive learning environment by ensuring that low-income students have access to the same laptop computing capabilities available to students from higher socioeconomic strata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That mission remains, and staff at OEM are also working with the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) to identify a way to allow new incoming and existing students to keep their laptops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several policy changes to the program will incorporate this new information. For example, students will not be required to return or buy their laptops as long as they complete at least one term of enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questions and inquiries
