(Joel Iverson, ITS Communications)<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than three hundred girls from nine southeast Michigan high schools visited the University of Michigan for the inaugural <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Get-IT (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mcwt.org\/programs\/list\/K-12-Initiatives\/GET-IT-PROGRAM\" target=\"_blank\">GET-IT<\/a> summit on Tuesday, October 1, at the Michigan League. The event gave female students the opportunity to connect with other women and girls who have an interest in the tech industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diane Jones, executive director of ITS administration, co-created and helped plan the summit. She said one of her goals with the event was to help students realize the opportunities they have access to. \u201cI wanted K-12 students, students from public schools, to see what is possible and to view a life that is past their front porch and neighborhoods,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWhen they leave U-M\u2019s campus today, they will know that anything is possible if that\u2019s what they want.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The major themes of the day were sisterhood, empowerment, and belonging. Many of the speakers and panelists encouraged and validated the attendees&#8217; interest in the tech industry, in which women make up only 20% of the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;When they leave U-M\u2019s campus today, they will know that anything is possible.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Diane Jones, Executive Director of ITS Administration <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about STEM, it\u2019s all about sisterhood, it\u2019s all about education, and the bright future we\u2019re going to build for each other,\u201d Andrew Humphrey, Local 4 News meteorologist and host of the show &#8220;Tech Time,&#8221; told the girls at the start of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liz Murray, best selling author and co-founder and executive director of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thearthurproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Arthur Project<\/a>, served as the day\u2019s keynote speaker. She encouraged the girls to own their futures and be their own heroes. \u201cYou\u2019re going to encounter a lot of people, if you haven\u2019t already, who are going to tell you what to do with your life,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one knows what\u2019s possible until you\u2019re already doing it. Don\u2019t you ever let anyone tell you what\u2019s possible. [&#8230;] Cynicism is the atrophy of your imagination and heart. You\u2019re more creative than that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murray\u2019s message of positivity, agency, and belonging carried through the rest of the day as IT professionals hosted panels and talks on technological innovations, careers, and education options. Female tech professionals from companies such as Ford Motor Company and Flagstar spent the day connecting with the students and sharing their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cI feel like tech is for me.\u201d <\/p><cite> Zhaneen Soto, a freshman at Regina High School <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That message came through to self-identified \u201cnerds,\u201d like Elizabeth Spiczzi, a junior at Regina High School in Warren, MI. She liked that the focus of the event was on empowering women and girls. \u201c[Attending] makes me feel more confident,\u201d Spiczzi said. \u201cLike, hey, I\u2019m not a weirdo!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The support from tech companies resonated with Aadya Doma, a junior from Salem High School, Canton, MI. \u201cIt\u2019s good that [tech companies] are promoting women in technology,\u201d Doma said. \u201c[This event] is important because there aren\u2019t a lot of women in tech, they\u2019re underrepresented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zhaneen Soto, a freshman at Regina High School, was also impressed with the support from companies and industry professionals. \u201cThese companies aren\u2019t afraid to support the cause of young women realizing what they want to do in the future,\u201d she said. Soto said she was encouraged to pursue her passion, coding, after attending the event. \u201cI feel like tech is for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOne of the benefits of this event is giving young girls access to an extremely successful role model who can help inspire them and give them confidence.\u201d <\/p><cite> Chris Rydzewski, Executive Director of MCWT <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mcwt.org\/programs\/list\/K-12-Initiatives\/GET-IT-PROGRAM\" target=\"_blank\">GET-IT<\/a> (Girls Exploring Together Information Technology) is an after school high school program run by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mcwt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan Council of Women in Technology<\/a> (MCWT). The summit brought girls from participating school\u2019s to U-M\u2019s campus with the help of ITS, LSA, and volunteers from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/it.umich.edu\/community\/communities-of-practice\/directory\/women-it\" target=\"_blank\">U-M\u2019s Women in IT Community of Practice<\/a> (WiTCOP) and across the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regina High School added the GET-IT program to their curriculum a year ago. Rosemary Michels, the school\u2019s STEM director, said working with MCWT and providing the program helps her students have a \u201cmeaningful experience\u201d with technology. \u201cOne of our goals is to be a STEM-certified school,\u201d Michels said. \u201cWe are working with teachers and students to create programs that will expose [students] to future career opportunities and build their skills to be successful in college and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skill-building is oftentimes a question of access to role models, as Chris Rydzewski, the executive director of MCWT, noted. \u201cOne of the benefits of this event is giving young girls access to an extremely successful role model who can help inspire them and give them confidence,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to help them know they can dream big and overcome anything that comes their way.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three hundred high school girls from southeast Michigan visited the University of Michigan for the inaugural Get-IT summit on Tuesday, October 1, at the Michigan League.
