(HITS)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Health Information Technology &amp; Services (HITS) Service Desk is searching for students, recent graduates or other qualified workers to join its&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/careers.umich.edu\/job_detail\/178842\/service_desk_apprenticeship_program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entry-level apprenticeship program<\/a>.&nbsp; The program is a partnership between Michigan Medicine and Washtenaw Community College (WCC).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since it began in 2018, the apprenticeship program has had 14 participants and is looking to hire at least four more to begin in Winter 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apprentices for the Service Desk provide customer service to the Michigan Medicine community, including clinicians, students, and others. Apprentices also have the opportunity to work in a professional IT department by participating in team meetings and other IT improvement tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With $14 per hour hiring rates for student labor and a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wccnet.edu\/academics\/programs\/view\/program\/CTCSTC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fully paid WCC certificate<\/a>, the program creates a receptive atmosphere and more maneuvers for apprentices to climb the ladder within the HITS service desk department. A possibility for higher employment have motivated past apprentices to excel within their positions\u2014especially since raises begin after three months of employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love seeing the apprentices gain the initial confidence to go from theory to practice,\u201dsaid Jarrod Sandel, manager of the HITS Service Desk. \u201cApprenticeship works because it pairs formal technical training with practical application; our apprentices are professionals after only a few weeks. It\u2019s so exciting to see them develop so quickly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through a traditional hiring process, Sandel hopes that meeting and collaborating with potential candidates helps to better understand how the program should be adjusted according to the candidate\u2019s or the program\u2019s need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAttracting talent is the primary reason I created this program. Contact centers will always have turnover, and trying to hire people off the street yields inconsistent results.
