(University of Michigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sept. 10, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/wireless\/verizon-brings-5g-to-university-michigan-auto-test-facility\">Verizon announced\u00a0that its 5G Ultra Wideband network is now live at U-M&#8217;s Mcity test facility<\/a>, where they\u2019re using various 5G solutions designed to improve pedestrian and auto safety. That includes 5G-connected cameras installed at intersections inside the Mcity test track to help identify traffic and pedestrian patterns to prevent collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signal controllers were installed at intersections within Mcity that provide signal phase and timing data to the 5G network. That way, they can help drivers \u201csee\u201d things before the human eye can register and thereby prevent collisions by changing the traffic signals when there\u2019s a safety risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTesting new technologies in a safe, controlled environment is essential before deploying automated vehicles on public streets and highways,\u201d said <strong>Greg McGuire<\/strong>, associate director at Mcity, in a statement. \u201cBy giving the companies who are testing here access to Verizon\u2019s 5G network, we\u2019re hoping they can improve on their existing technology and potentially create applications that don\u2019t even exist yet to make our roads and intersections safer.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Sept. 10, Verizon announced\u00a0that its 5G Ultra Wideband network is now live at U-M&#8217;s Mcity test facility, where they\u2019re using various 5G solutions designed to improve pedestrian and auto safety.
