But new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.umich.edu\/news\/online-civic-engagement-not-always-positive-experience-say-researchers\">research led by School of Information associate professor <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.umich.edu\/news\/online-civic-engagement-not-always-positive-experience-say-researchers\">Libby Hemphill<\/a><\/strong> suggests that online civic engagement doesn\u2019t always feel good, and it doesn\u2019t always improve the community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hemphill and her team interviewed 40 nonprofit employees and their affiliates, exploring nonprofit social media adoption, feelings of community attachment, and civic engagement. They found the interview subjects view online civic engagement as \u201cfrequently uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost literature on civic engagement centers on \u2018Yay! Engagement is great! It makes the world a better place!\u2019\u201d says Hemphill. \u201cBut sometimes these engagements don\u2019t feel good. Sometimes they are disruptive or destructive.
