The IPS covers most Ann Arbor campus networks, excluding the Health System. The work was completed during the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"maintenance window (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/status.its.umich.edu\/report.php?id=144480\" target=\"_blank\">maintenance window<\/a> on January 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSetup allows many more wireless devices to connect to the U-M network than ever before\u2014including smart speakers, wearables, game consoles, and other devices.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ITS intends to use IPS as an interim solution. A pair of Cisco FirePower firewalls will be installed in place of the IPS as a long-term solution in the coming months.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internet of (vulnerable) Things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security is a big issue for the Internet of Things (IoT). Many of the devices that can now be connected using MSetup are vulnerable to attacks as a result of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Weak or unchangeable passwords<\/li><li>Unencrypted communications<\/li><li>Insecure web interfaces that grant unauthorized access<\/li><li>Inability to make secure updates<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of intrusion protection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding protection to the network infrastructure, like IPS, is an important way to protect U-M networks from these vulnerabilities. Benefits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fewer security incidents<\/li><li>Less disruption for university systems<\/li><li>Privacy protection<\/li><li>Multiple threat protection<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/its.umich.edu\/enterprise\/wifi-networks\/network-security\/ips\/benefits\">Read more IPS benefits<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, in September 2015, MWireless infrastructure gained IPS protection. At the time, former U-M chief information officer said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The network IPS is an important component of the U-M security program, and I am pleased that it is now protecting MWireless users and their devices from malicious Internet traffic, such as webpages known to be involved in phishing scams or to download malicious code.
