Equipped with evidence from past learning dashboard efforts, research faculty and graduate students in SI and SOE have been working with development staff from T&amp;L on designing \u2014and then ruthlessly critiquing \u2014a series of rapid prototypes. These prototypes are aimed at visualizing learning data in a way that students can use to inform improvements to their study behaviors.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process resulted in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/umich.edu\/my-learning-analytics-help\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Learning Analytics<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MyLA) service being piloted in three courses in fall, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embedded visualizations<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyLA includes three data visualizations to support student learning and engagement with courses that are embedded within the normal instructional workflows of Canvas: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Files Accessed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> visualization displays which files peers are accessing each week. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assignment Planning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> visualization, students can glean which assignments have the greatest impact on their grade, when assignments are due, and how far they have progressed through the assignments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade Distribution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> visualization shows them their performance in comparison to their peers. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11070 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-grade-dist.png\" alt=\"My LA grade distribution\" width=\"302\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-grade-dist.png 302w, https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-grade-dist-161x140.png 161w, https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-grade-dist-230x200.png 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11068 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-assignment-planning.png\" alt=\"My LA assignment planning\" width=\"302\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-assignment-planning.png 302w, https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-assignment-planning-160x140.png 160w, https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/My-LA-assignment-planning-229x200.png 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/span><\/h1>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting research in student learning analytics<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U-M has long been a leader in learning analytics. For this project, ITS Teaching and Learning partnered with faculty researchers Stephanie Teasley, Matthew Kay, and graduate student Carl Haynes from UMSI and faculty researcher Stuart Karabenick from SOE. Acknowledging that student dashboards are becoming ubiquitous in learning management systems, the researchers recognized the need for research into how students understand and apply the information in those dashboards. They want to know if students are able to interpret the information dashboards provide and if they know what to do with it. Also, they question which students find the information motivating versus demotivating and under which circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With My Learning Analytics, the research team will survey students and track their usage to begin to answer those questions as they study student use of the dashboard to uncover correlations between use of analytics and changes in student behavior leading to improvement in student outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building on the UDP<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond its research goals, MyLA provided developers an opportunity to build a service that consumes data from the new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/michigan.it.umich.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/30\/unizin-data-platform\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unizin Data Platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UDP). U-M partnered with the Unizin consortium to develop a unified learning data platform that ingests and commonly models data from multiple sources, such as the student information system, Canvas learning management system, and online learning tools. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next steps<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project team has begun to review initial usage statistics and feedback from one pilot course. In anticipation for the winter 2019 pilot, they are looking for additional participants.
